Why is Mike Krzyzewski out? Coach K suspended for Game No. 8 Duke vs. Wake Forest

No. 8 Duke will be Wednesday night against Wake Forest without his head coach.

In what would be his last coaching at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Mike Krzyzewski will miss No. 8 Duke vs. Wake Foest due to a disease unrelated to COVID, announced the team. The university has also confirmed that assistant coach Jon Scheyer will act as acting coach for the match against the Demon Deacons.

The Hall of Fame member will retire at the end of the season and Scheyer will be chosen as Coach K’s successor. This will be the second time Krzyzewski has handed the keys to Scheyer in the last two seasons. After one of the members of the Krzyzewski family tested positive for COVID-19 in January 2021, Coach K was forced into quarantine.

Scheyer helped lead the Blue Devils to a 83:82 win against Boston College on January 6, 2021.

During his 42 seasons in the Blue Devils program, Krzyzewski scored 57-28 against Wake Forest and won 18-12 at the Colosseum in Winston-Salem, NC. On February 17, 2021, he recorded his last 86:60 victory against the Demon Deacons.

Duke had two games postponed in December as the program battled the uncontrollable COVID-19 epidemic. Since returning from a short break, the Blue Devils have recorded a 67:57 win against Georgia Tech and suffered a close loss of 76:74 with Miami.

Duke will be trying to get back on track on Wednesday, while Scheyer is expected to rely on rookie Paolo Bancher, who leads the team with 17.3 points and 7.5 rebounds. On the other hand, the Demon Deacons (13-3) have won seven in a row this season and 13 of 14 in the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
