After gaining super-medium weight and thinking about switching to cruiser, Canelo Alvarez might be interested in returning to his former weight category.
The undisputed super middleweight champion was recently associated with Ilunga Makabu, the WBC cross-weight champion, if he successfully defended his title against Thabiso Mchun on January 29. However, Canelo may have a different challenge in mind.
Mike Coppinger of ESPN spoke on State of Boxing and discussed the next steps for Canelo.
Canelo wants to take a break after the busy year of 2021 and could return to middleweight for the first time since 2019. His opponent could be WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo.
“I’m not so sure Canelo will fight cruiserweight or against Makabu,” Coppinger said. “I’ve heard he’s much more likely to face Jermall Charl at the Cinco de Mayo.” Talks are underway about this fight right now. “
In November, Canelo won the TKO against Caleb Plant to win the IBF title in super middleweight. The victory led to him becoming the undisputed champion in just 11 months.
From 2015 to 2019, Canelo dominated the medium weight division. He defeated Miguel Cotta for the WBC title, Gennadiy Golovkin for the WBA title and Daniel Jacobs for the IBF title.

In addition to potential matches with Charlo and Makabu, Canelo has also shown interest in the lightweight division.
Charlo made his professional debut in 2008. The former junior IBF middleweight champion, a 31-year-old, won the 2018 WBC middleweight title. After being promoted to full-time champion, he defended the belt five times. His last match was in June, when he defeated Juan Macias Montiel by a unanimous decision.
When Canelo battled Plant, Charlo said on the PBC Podcast that he was interested in standing up to the winners.
“Yeah, hopefully whoever wins, hopefully we can make a mega-deal,” Charlo told Boxing News 24. “I’m looking for a mega-deal and I’m expanding my heritage.” If any of those guys give me a chance, I’ll definitely use it. “
Plant and WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade also challenged Charles to fight.
