Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has revealed that he will not pursue Jim Harbaugh as a replacement for Brian Flores

The Dolphins have made a surprising decision to fire coach Brian Flores on “Black Monday” after three years with the team. Following this announcement, many NFL detectives immediately thought they knew what was going on.

Miami owner Stephen Ross loves flashy moves so much that he tried to lure Jim Harbaugh away from the 49ers many months ago. Harbaugh is reportedly considering returning to the NFL after leading Michigan to the College Football playoffs. Naturally, that must mean the dolphins shot Flores to chase Harbaugh, right?

Not quite.

Ross approached Harbaugh’s rumors shortly after announcing that Flores would no longer train dolphins. He claimed that Miami would not pursue the former 49ers coach. Why?

“I will not be the person to marry Jim Harbaugh of the University of Michigan,” Ross told reporters. “I hope he stays there.”

Ross is a Michigan graduate, so it’s no surprise that he wants Harbaugh to stay in school. Harbaugh followed the 61:24 program and in 2021 led the Wolverines to their first title in the top ten since they shared it with Iowa in 2004.

That means if Ross doesn’t seriously consider looking at Harbaugh, he’s doing a dolphin service. Harbaugh recorded a 44-19-1 record during his four seasons with the 49ers, and his 0.695 winning percentage is the fifth highest mark in NFL history behind Guy Chamberlain, Vince Lombardi, John Madden and George Allen. He helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2013 before narrowly losing to the Ravens and his brother John.

Harbaugh has also helped Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick become quality starters thanks to his previous 14 years of experience as an NFL quarterback. He could have had a similar impact on Tu Tagovailoa if he had the chance to work with him.

Maybe Ross will change the tune if it’s clear that Harbaugh is leaving Michigan, but for now, he looks like he wants to look elsewhere for Flores. There are a lot of potential coaching candidates on the open market, so maybe the Dolphins will push an offensive version of this group instead of Harbaugh.
