Today’s football matches AFCON 2022: Times, TV schedule, results of matches in USA and Canada

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is finally here and the host Cameroon started the competition on the opening day of the tournament on Sunday.

The indomitable lions who last won the tournament in 2017 will be one of 24 nations that want to succeed over Algeria as African champions. Led by Riyadh Mahrez of Manchester City and striker Baghdad Bounedjah, the Algerians had an unforgettable journey to their second AFCON crown in 2019 when they defeated Senegal in the final. The Senegalese, who are the bookmakers’ favorite to win everything, will again be expected to fight and start the game on the second day of the tournament.

Senegal has a star front line led by Liverpool Sadie Man. His club teammate Mohamed Salah is probably the biggest star of the event and will have pressure to help Egypt lead to its first AFCON championship since 2010. Ajax striker Sebastien Haller (Ivory Coast) is another suitable candidate for a star at AFCON.

Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases attributed to omicron variants worldwide, the organizers are taking precautionary measures and the matches will take place in front of a limited crowd, with only vaccinated fans gaining entry. It is clear that there will be no delays and 11 players will be enough for any team to enter the field. Extended rosters of 28 players and five substitutes (including a sixth for overtime) are expected to help coaches navigate potential hotspots.

AFCON 2022 tournament format

As at other continental championships and World Cup tournaments, the African Cup of Nations begins with a group stage, followed by elimination rounds until the final.

  • Group stage: 9-20 January
  • Round 16: 23-26 January
  • Quarterfinals: 29-30 January
  • Semifinal: 2-3 February
  • Third place: February 6
  • Final: February 6

All 24 nations are divided into six groups of four nations. At the end of the group game, each with each – with three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss – the two best teams in each group advance to the elimination fights based on points (and tiebreaks if necessary). The remaining places in the 16th round will be filled by the top four in third place.

The predetermined elimination game will be played until the final. If any elimination match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the teams will play 30 minutes extra time. If the draw persists, the penalty shootout will decide the team’s progress. The match for third place is the only one that would miss the overtime in the event of a draw and move straight to the shootout.

For the first time in the history of the competition, the Referee Video Assistant (VAR) will be used in all 52 matches.
