AFCON 2022 Schedule: A complete list of dates, times, TV channels for watching and streaming matches

The organizers may have been forced to move the competition back a year, but the African Cup of Nations eventually takes place in Cameroon, where 24 countries are fighting for the crown of the best team in Africa, a title currently held by the dominant Algerian team. The complete schedule of the tournament can be found below.

The Algerians could set a record during this year’s AFCON tournament if they remain undefeated in the next four matches. They enter the tournament of the day 34 matches without defeat which is approaching the 37-loss-free match set by Italy in 2021. Algeria, which added the FIFA Arab Cup to its trophy collection in December, is expected to receive the biggest challenge to the title from Senegal, the team it defeated in the final. finals of the last issue. The Senegalese are looking for their first AFCON championship.

Egypt has won the tournament more often than any other nation (seven), but has not won the trophy since 2010. Pharaohs fans will hope that Liverpool superstar striker Mohamed Salah will take the team far. Ivory Coast has a deep and experienced team, while the host Cameroon will be happy to surprise and repeat its 2017.

Cameroon is hosting the tournament for the first time since 1972, and all eyes will be on the impact of the recent COVID-19 wave on the event. The rapidly expanding variant of omicron has already caused confusion in league competitions around the world, and positive tests could cause unpredictable formations. However, there will be no delays and the coaches will expand the rosters by 28 men and five substitutes (and a sixth in overtime) to help manage any outbreaks.

The matches will be played in front of an audience with reduced capacity in the presence of fans who must prove vaccinated. It remains to be seen how many fans will actually show up, as 2 percent of Cameroon’s population are vaccinated, according to Reuters.

AFCON 2022: Tournament Format

As at other continental championships and World Cup tournaments, the African Cup of Nations begins with a group stage, followed by elimination rounds until the final. And for the first time in the history of the competition, all 52 matches will include video reviews and the use of a video assistant referee (VAR).

Group stage: All 24 nations are divided into six groups of four nations. At the end of the group game, each with each – with three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss – the two best teams in each group advance to the elimination fights based on points (and tiebreaks if necessary). The remaining places in the 16th round will be filled by the top four in third place.

Elimination phase: The predetermined elimination game will be played until the final. If any elimination match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the teams will play 30 minutes extra time. If the draw persists, the penalty shootout will decide the team’s progress. The match for third place is the only one that would miss the overtime in the event of a draw and move straight to the shootout.
