Alex Ovechkin continues to lead the list of all NHL goals scored.
Captain Capitals entered the season 2021-22 with 730 career goals. This put him back 164th on Wayne Gretzki’s 894. Questions arose as to whether he could beat “The Great One” because “The Great 8” had hit the final years of his career. But as Gretzky says, she expects – and hopes to do so – to break the all-time record.

Will Alex Ovechkin pass Wayne Gretzki?
Never say never!
This season, Ovechkin lagged behind Gretzky by 164 goals. Even if it has a start, it is unlikely that it will find the back of the net as often as before. A reasonable peak could be the 50-goal barrier, which he last reached in 2018-19, although during the 2019-20 season, the shortened COVID scored at a 50-goal pace.
Fifty goals in 82 matches means 0.61 goals per match. If he played every match forward – which is unlikely to say the least – he would need 229 matches (as of January 7) to catch Gretzki. That would be sometime during the 2024-25 season.
Of course, if he continued to score at a brisk pace, he could get there sooner. Ovechkin’s career maximum number of goals per match is 0.79, which he set in 2008-09. Even according to the most rosy projections, Ovechkin could catch Gretzky in the middle of the 2023-24 season at the earliest.
It is impossible to predict health, but needless to say, this is perhaps the biggest factor in evaluating a 36-year-old’s chances of becoming a champion of all time in scoring.
How many Rocket Richard Trophies has Alex Ovechkin won?
The Maurice Richard Trophy, commonly called the Rocket Richard Trophy, was awarded to the NHL’s top scorer by the NHL Board of Governors and was awarded by the NHL Montreal Canadiens in honor of a Hall of Fame member. During his 18 seasons in the Canadiens, Richard led the NHL five times in goals, being the first to score 50 in 50 games (1944-45) and the first to score 500 goals in league history. He ended his career with 544 goals in 978 matches.
The trophy was first handed out after the 1998-99 season to Teem Selanne of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, who led the NHL with 47 goals.
Ovechkin won the trophy a record nine times. He could have won in his rookie year, but he lost to Jonathan Cheechoo of the Sharks by four goals and missed a goal in the 2009-10 season.
