Why was the NBCSN closed?

The NBCSN has stood for American sports fans since its launch as the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) in 1995, originally broadcasting outdoor sports such as fishing, hunting, and eventually became known for its coverage of the Tour de France. The network was renamed Versus in 2006 and took over coverage of the NHL, martial arts and NASCAR.

In January 2012, shortly after Comcast merged with NBC, the network was renamed NBC Sports Network, and a year later the nickname was officially abbreviated to NBCSN. By 2020, the network was named the second most watched sports network after ESPN.

NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua first announced the closure of the NBCSN to employees in a memorandum on January 22, 2021, and then formally announced it later in the year.

NBC was stingy about the exact reason why the NBCSN was closed, and in an internal report it called it “part of a larger transition”. But there is widespread speculation that shutting down the NBCSN is part of the company’s desire to push more sports content into its Peacock streaming service in hopes of enticing fans to subscribe.
