When will Gio Reyna return? Borussia Dortmund analysis and the absence of USMNT star injuries

19-year-old Gio Reyna has been out of the game for several months and is missing several important matches for the club and the country.

The American men’s national team and winger Borussie Dortmund has not appeared since September because he was struggling with a right thigh muscle injury.

He is likely to continue to miss time when he completes his recovery and returns to full wrestling condition. The question now is when Reyna will be available for both the US and Dortmund.

Why doesn’t Reyna play for Borussia Dortmund?

Reyna has been out of the game since September 2, when he suffered a hamstring injury during the USMNT World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador. He played a full 90 minutes of the match, but a few days later was eliminated from subsequent USMNT matches in this international window.

Since then, he has not played in Dortmund or the United States, as he has missed seven World Cup qualifiers. In addition, he missed the vast majority of Dortmund’s season when he appeared in only three of the club’s first 18 matches in the Bundesliga.

The injury was frustrating for the young winger, as it was not originally intended to keep him out of the game for so long. Indeed, reports from the end of October indicated that he was already expected to return by then, but that the failures had abolished the original timeline. At that moment, his club publicly expressed hope for his return before the new year, but even that did not come true.

When will Reyna return to Borussia Dortmund?

It has not been confirmed how soon Reyna could return to Dortmund, but it is possible that he will return after February 2, when the USMNT will face Honduras.

Dortmund plays Bayer Leverkusen on February 6 and then Union Berlin on February 13, so Reyna could potentially appear at any of these games. Even if he returned to training at the time, his fitness could prolong his time off.

Reyna has had several wrong starts since she suffered an injury that turned out to be worse than she had originally feared. The American dressed for Dortmund’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt on January 8, but did not make it.

Then, in preparation for Dortmund’s next game against Freiburg six days later, coach Marco Rose said that Reyna was “on the right track” but was not yet fully ready to return to the squad.

Which games could Reyna miss?

After Friday’s match with Freiburg, Dortmund is waiting for two more matches before the national team break – on January 18, the DFB-Pokal match against the second-league St. Pauli and the January 22 Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim.

Reyna is not expected to be among the team named by USMNT chief Gregg Berhalter for the upcoming three World Cup qualifiers on January 27, January 30 and February 2 against El Salvador and Honduras in Canada.

As soon as the players return to Germany to resume the club season, the next matches will be the aforementioned matches against Bayer Leverkusen and the Union Berlin by the beginning of February. On February 17, the big elimination match of the European League against the Rangers will take place before the February 20 critical match of the Bundesliga against the fighting Gladbach. If the injury takes him out of service for longer, the season will be really lost for Reyna.
