Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers admits that Youri Tielemans could leave the club and have to prepare for life without a midfielder.
Tielemans was associated with the transfer to Arsenal when he entered for the last 18 months of his contract.
The record-breaking Foxes, who came from Monaco for £ 35 million in 2019 after initial guest appearances, excelled under Rodgers and scored against Chelsea last May when Leicester first won the FA Cup.
The club has been negotiating a contract with the Belgian national team for months, but they have not yet agreed and Rodgers has indicated that the Tielemans could leave.
He said: “He’s at the age and stage of the contract when he has to make sure he considers every option. I’d like to be here in Leicester, that’s natural, but I understand it’s a very short career.”
“For players, it’s about ambition, challenge, and sometimes it’s about a different environment. We’ve seen it many times.”
“The teams have won the Champions League and the player will go on. That is the nature. For me, I can only make sure that I am constantly improving him as a player, keeping him focused and letting him take care of everything else.
“We have a close relationship, he’s really strong. When I first came, I made a commitment to him to improve him as a player and he believed in the neighborhood.
“Once a player is dedicated, focused and professional, it’s never a concern for me. With Youri you can see his joy of being here, he loves to be here and you have to respect that these guys’ careers are short.”
Rodgers has always been pragmatic about retaining Leicester stars, Harry Maguire joined Manchester United in 2019 for £ 80 million and will always have substitutes.
“You always have to, that’s key. I’ve already said about the supply of players. You always have to look ahead, that’s important. Sometimes it happens unexpectedly,” he said.
“Other times you know where the situation is. We will always look for the type of player that suits the way we work, it has always been so and it will be the same with every player in any position.”
“If we lose one, we must be ready for the next.”
