Australian Open 2022 draw: Novak Djokovic in limbo; Naomi Osaka is back

The draw for the Australian Open 2022 was officially announced four days before the start of the first grand slam tournament of the year. At this point, both defending champions will play.

The current player number 1: Novak Djokovic brought the most attention to the draw. After being granted a medical exemption to travel to Australia, even though he had not been vaccinated on COVID-19, he was subsequently denied entry on arrival. He appealed on visas and the results have not yet been determined. So Djokovic’s status in Melbourne is still uncertain, but right now he is leading the way. In the first round, he should play with the No. 78 player in the world, Serb Miomir Kecmanovich.

Defending champion Naomi Osaka will play in this year’s tournament. Osaka took some time after sports after the US Open due to persistent mental health problems. She sits 13th and will face Player No. 53, Colombian Camila Osorio, in the opening round.

There are a few vacancies left in the Australian Open draw for qualifiers. The qualifying rounds will end on Friday 14 January and will determine who will fill the remaining places.

Here is a summary of the other top players heading to the Australian Open 2022, with whom the Americans will play in the tournament.

In second place is US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. In the first round, he will face Henri Laaksonen from Switzerland. Alexander Zverev is the No. 3 player in the tournament. The young German has not yet won his first grand slam title.

Rafael Nadal, who is in a tie with Djokovic and Roger Federer in the number of grand slam titles in the history of men’s singles (20), is in 6th place. Nadal missed Wimbledon and the US Open last year due to recurring injuries.

Three-time Grand Slam winner and five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray will play in Melbourne for the first time since 2019, but this time on a wild card. Murray has played occasionally since his hip operation in 2018. In the first round, he will face player number 21 Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (4), Andrey Rublev (5), Matteo Berrettini (7), Casper Rudd (8), Felix Auger-Aliassime (9) and Hubert Hurkacz (10) finish in the top 10 in the men’s singles draw.

Federer is expected to miss at least the first half of the year as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

So far, 13 Americans are playing at this year’s Australian Open, three of whom are involved: Taylor Fritz (20), John Isner (22) and Reilly Opelka (23). There is only one pan-American match in the first round: Isner vs. Maxime Cressy.

Other American tennis players who have completed grand slam races in the past include Sam Querrey, Sebastian Korda, Steve Johnson and Frances Tiafoe.

The best players in the world

Australian Ashleigh Barty has become the No. 1 player in the world. The two-time Grand Slam winner has not yet reached the Australian Open final in her career. Her opponent in the first round is still to be determined.

The winner of the US Open from 2021, Emma Raducanu (17), will face the American Sloane Stephens in the first round. Raducan became the first qualifier to win a grand slam tournament last year.

Spanish player Garbiñe Muguruza is in third place after winning the WTA Finals 2021 title. The two-time Grand Slam champion once made it to the Australian Open final in 2020.

Many of the top 10 women in this year’s tournament are newcomers, with several previous Australian Open winners now betting below. For example, 2016 champion Angelique Kerber is 16th this year.

Aryna Sabalenka (2), Barbora Krejčíková (4), Maria Sakkari (5), Anett Kontaveit (6), Iga Swiatek (7), Paula Badosa (8), Ons Jabeur (9) and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (10) finishes the top 10 deployed in the women’s singles draw.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams announced in early December that she would not compete in the Austrailan Open this year.

At least 15 American players will take part in this year’s inaugural grand slam, four of them.

The top-ranking American women’s player is Sofia Kenin at the 11th Australian Open in 2020 for her only grand slam victory so far. In the first round, she will face the American Madison Keys.

Young superstar Coco Gauff (18) has never made it to the quarterfinals in a grand slam tournament. In the first round, she will face the Chinese Qiang Wang.

Other American players include Jessica Pegula (21) and Danielle Collins (27).
