Passengers paid up to £ 5,000 a head for a cruise on the famous Cunard ship from Southampton sailing on 13 December, which was scheduled to head to New York and then stop in the Caribbean before returning this weekend.
But by the time they crossed the Atlantic in the first stage of the voyage, they were infected with a covid on board and, despite ten passengers who had tested positive by then, left the ship in New York, and the number of passengers and crew became infected. he rocketed.

By the time they arrived in Barbados, most passengers had been told they could not disembark, and many were forced to spend days in their cabins without having to leave. And the number of sick employees meant that conditions deteriorated sharply.
Christine Martin (66) from Angmering in West Sussex and her husband, an optometrist Richard (70), tested positive at the end of December, despite being stabbed three times and taking all precautionary measures.
The couple, who paid £ 9,860 for the trip, had few, if any, symptoms, but remained frustrated that they had been locked up for several days and had nothing to do.
Ms. Martin told Mail Online: “We had a positive test on Covid on Tuesday, December 28, and we have been in isolation ever since. It was pretty lousy. We have a balcony for fresh air, but we have no place to exercise at all.
“It’s hard to know exactly how many people tested positive because they didn’t tell us, but friends who are still allowed to use canteens tell us they’re scary.
“The captain regularly talks about tannoy with the passengers, but he never mentions us – positive passengers – or a happy new year.” We feel like lepers. “

She continued: “Our food is served cold on paper plates. We will receive clean linen, but only on request. We had one phone call from the doctor on December 29, except that we called to ask about testing, etc. No one else asked about our overall health. ”

Mrs. Martin continued: “It all started when we came to New York from Southampton and people started having a positive test. We all had a routine test and those with Covid were not allowed to perform.
“We were in New York for three days and then we sailed to the Caribbean with new American passengers on board.” Our first stop was supposed to be Tortola, but we were not allowed to anchor there and it was the same in all ports up to Barbados. “

The ship docked in Bridgetown, Barbados for three days, which means that it also missed its other three scheduled stops, in Roseau in Dominica, Philipsburg in the Netherlands Antilles and a second stay in New York. Instead, he heads straight back to Southampton with passengers who intended to disembark in New York instead of flying from Barbados. Others, who could afford it and had enough, flew back to the United Kingdom instead of sailing.
It is believed that so many employees were ill and isolated themselves on board, that new workers had to go on board for the ship to work. He is now on his way back to Southampton and many passengers are still isolated in the cabins.
“Only passengers who booked an organized trip could come ashore. At that time, Covid became a bigger problem to the extent that the captain decided we could not go to our last port or back to New York.
“The passengers who were to land in New York were airlifted back from Barbados, and those who landed in Southampton who wanted to fly back preferred to stay on the ship … as many of them as possible were taken back to the United Kingdom.”

She added: “The big problem was the complete lack of information from the Bridge about the extent of Covid on board and anything else. Of course, covid should be taken seriously, but the lack of information provided is unbearable. “
A spokesman for the cruise ship said they were unable to provide numbers, how many were affected by the positive tests.
They said: “Cunard / P&O Cruises has an approved framework of improved protocols to protect the health and well-being of the guests, crew and communities we visit and manage against Covid-19.
“This framework includes the requirement that all guests and the entire crew be fully vaccinated, as well as pre-boarding and on-board testing as required by some ports.
As with all international travel protocols, if a guest has a positive Covid-19 test on board, they and their close contacts will isolate themselves and their other guests.
“All isolated guests can request room service from the entire dining room and cabin menu at any time and have the support of the ship’s crew at all times.
“Our medical teams on board will then process the local port authority / port health requirements to determine whether guests should remain on board during the isolation period or disembark.
In situations where guests are required to disembark from the ship, we will provide the most suitable accommodation to continue the period of isolation.
“In most cases, these will be pre-designated hotels that have been identified as being able to accommodate positive Covid-19 cases.
“All guests who enter these circumstances have ongoing and direct support from our dedicated support team.”
